JOAO ESTEVES, the Portuguese man allegedly murdered by Daniel Palmer in Three Bridges, had schizophrenia, a court has heard. Mr Esteves, 45, arrived at Gatwick Airport on a flight from Lisbon, where he lived with his elderly mother, at about 9.30am on January 15. He came to the UK in search of work but four days later was found in an alleyway between Stephenson Way and Haslett Avenue East with a serious head injury. He died later that day (January 19) in hospital. A post-mortem carried out showed Mr Esteves had died from a "head injury, as a result of multiple blunt impacts to the head and face area". When emergency services got to Mr Esteves at about 3.25am on the morning in question, he was in cardiac arrest. The post-mortem revealed that the high levels of alcohol in Mr Esteves's blood - the court heard he had been "severely intoxicated" - and the cold conditions had contributed to him going into cardiac arrest. Drugs for treating his schizophrenia - clozapine and diazepam - were also in Mr Esteves' bloodstream. Daniel Palmer has pleaded not guilty to murder. His trial continues.
