Faili: Three Bridges were 'too nice' against Faversham Town

$

THREE Bridges manager Paul Faili believes the "season starts now" after back-to-back 3-0 defeats against the top two sides in Ryman League Division One South.

Bridges faded in the second half at Salters Lane on Saturday, conceding three times in the second half to slip to defeat against second-placed Faversham.

But Faili was not too downbeat, admitting his side had put up a good fight despite missing three first-team players in Lee Carney, Allan Tait and Callum Donaghey.

Faili said: "You can look at it and say we've lost the last three games, but East Grinstead aren't being beaten at the moment and we've lost to Burgess Hill and Faversham, first and second in the league.

"What can I say? They're both very good sides, both looking to win the league this season.

"We can start our season again now.

"To lose three massive players is never going to help a side and they are a big factor for us.

"To lose those three regular first-team players right the way down the middle is always going to make a difference."

Faili also said that his team were "too nice" in the Faversham defeat and that they might have to change to pick up a few more results.

He added: "We have to possibly learn how to cheat a game.

"We're too honest at Three Bridges, we don't go down screaming when we get tackled, we're men, we stand up and we'll have a toe-to-toe with anybody, we're too nice.

"I think now we've really got to start to dig in, we're probably 15 points away from being safe, from seventh, eighth down to probably third from bottom is a battle right now.

"I don't think I've ever known it as tight as this.

"The top two are having a run off, third and fourth are linked in, and the last play-off place will be contested between two or three sides, but if I get to a decent mid-table level, around tenth, that is one hell of a season for Three Bridges.

"The boys played fantastically well in the first half, they worked so hard effectively to keep Faversham out of the game really, I don't think we had a shot in the first half, but what we did do is we frustrated them and that was good.

"Faversham notched it up a gear in the second half and, when their full-backs punched on, we got overrun a bit and we paid the price."

Hollingbury Hawks deny Three Bridges U16s

YOUTH FOOTBALL: Three Bridges' youth teams should have started the second half of the season at the weekend but many games were postponed because of the rain.

A 3-1 home defeat by Hollingbury Hawks prevented the Sussex Sunday U16 youth team from reaching the semi-final of the league's knockout cup.

Three Bridges U15 had a creditable 1-1 draw with title-chasing Hawks Youth Withdean Whites to maintain their mid-table Division One position. Thomas Hughes scored for Bridges. A high-scoring game ended with Bridges' Surrey Youth U14 Colts team sharing the goals in a 4-4 draw away to NPL Youth.

After going one goal behind, a superb hat-trick by Sayif Ahmed gave the team a 3-2 lead at half-time.

A goal in the second half for Younes Ainine, and then poor defending, allowed NPL Youth to draw level after 75 minutes.

Taking into account the postponed games, the Colts still sit at mid-table in Division One.

Mid-Sussex U14 remain near the foot of the table after losing 4-1 to Division Three leaders Southdown Athletic, their goal coming from Adama Gaye.

After many postponements and venue changes, the Sussex Sunday U13 Colts played Pevensey & Westham in the quarter-final of the Sussex County FA Les Kempster Challenge Trophy and lost 2-0.

A goal for player-of-the-match Karim Ellmelas and another for Brennan Edwards were not enough for the Horsham & District U13 team to progress to the semi-final of the John Laker Memorial Challenge Cup as they lost 4-2 to Crawley United.

Will it snow in Crawley and Sussex? Weather warning in place for gale force winds and heavy rain

WEATHER forecasters' predictions of possible snow in Sussex overnight may have proved unfounded - but that isn't stopping them from predicting that we will finally get some of the white stuff this weekend. Winter showers are being predicted this Sunday - and before then weather warnings are in place for heavy rain and strong winds tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday). And long-range forecasts - which are known to be more inaccurate - are predicting conditions for next week which will be more suitable for snow to fall than is the case this week. The Met Office says that the mix of mild and cold weather we have experienced since before Christmas is likely to come to an end by the weekend when cold, Arctic air spreads down from the north. The jet stream has driven lively weather systems on a south-west to north-east track over the past few weeks. But now it looks like the jet stream will tilt – and draw down icy breezes from the polar regions. If the high-level jet stream changes its course as predicted, temperatures will remain low over Sussex for up to a week from Sunday. Frost will become widespread and there will be a chance of sleet and snow showers, the Met Office says. Local weather expert Ian Currie in his long-range forecast predicts that the very changeable weather we have seen so far in January will give way to cold frosty weather with snow showers at the end of January and that this could last throughout the first two weeks of February after which milder conditions would return. For the remainder of this week the Met Office predicts a wet and stormy period tonight (Wednesday) with gusts of wind of up to 60mph or more. Tonight rain and strong to gale force winds are predicted, with severe gales possible on the Sussex coast. Tomorrow will again be very windy, with scattered showers giving way to some sunny spells as the day goes on. The outlook for Friday to Sunday is cold on Friday and Saturday with sunny intervals and scattered wintry showers, and overnight frost with icy patches. Sleet and snow is likely on Sunday forecasters say - particularly on the South Downs. A yellow weather warning of rain is in place from 3pm this afternoon (Wednesday) until 9am tomorrow. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel due to standing water and spray as well as localised flooding. A yellow weather warning of high winds is in place from 3pm until 11.50pm tomorrow (Thursday). The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport and possibly power supplies.

Crawley Town confirm Joe Walsh will not miss League One games

CRAWLEY Town have confirmed skipper Joe Walsh will not miss any League One games after being given a straight red card in Tuesday night's 6-1 defeat to Whitehawk in the Sussex Senior Cup. Walsh might have been facing three games on the side lines during a time when Crawley Town are already short on defenders. But the Reds have confirmed with the Football Association that for Crawley, like Brighton & Hove Albion, the Sussex Senior Cup does not count as a first team fixture, therefore Walsh's suspension is only relevant for reserve team fixtures (despite the club not having a reserve team). Crawley Town aid: "The FA confirmed this morning that the three-match ban only applies to what it deems as non-first team games, such as county cup competitions like the Sussex Senior Cup."

MORRISONS is to close its store in Broadfield it has been revealed this morning. The supermarket giant confirmed yesterday that it was closing 10 stores across the country that weren't making a profit. It was not initially confirmed which stores were to close but rumours started to circulate online that the store in Broadfield Barton was one of the stores being lined up for closure. And this morning a Morrisons spokeswoman released a statement to the Crawley News, which said: "We have looked extremely carefully at whether the store can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable. "We are therefore proposing its closure. We are consulting with colleagues and unions to reduce the risk of redundancies and we are looking at ways of redeploying colleagues around our business." It is only a matter of months since Morrisons opened a huge new store in Crawley town centre. That is part of a development that includes a Travelodge hotel and the Turtle Bay restaurant. Morrisons has been coming under pressure nationally at both ends of the market - from budget chains such as Aldi and Lidl, and upmarket chain Waitrose, with both increasing their market share at the expense of Morrisons and also Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. A first-ever Aldi store for the town is set to open this year in Manor Royal at a new retail park. A date has not yet been confirmed for when the Broadfield Morrisons will close. The chain's chief executive Dalton Philips is also leaving after five years in charge. The firm said the search had begun for a replacement boss and that he would stay until the year-end results in March. News of the 10 store closures came as Morrisons reported Christmas trading figures with like-for-like sales falling by 5.2 per cent for the six weeks to January 4.

Saunders admits it was 'men against boys' in Whitehawk defeat

MANAGER Dean Saunders admits it was "men against boys" as Crawley Town were dumped out of the Sussex Senior Cup by Whitehawk on Tuesday night. Despite the small squad at his disposal, Saunders fielded a much-changed side in the cup game handing starts to goalkeeper Euandro Raimoni De Lima and former Hull City striker Matthew Fletcher, a trialist. Ryan Richefond, Charles Banya and Emmett O'Connor, all of whom have found their first team opportunities limited, were also named in the starting XI. The Reds took the lead against the Conference South side, Lewis Young scoring after 17 minutes, however it was all downhill from there will the Hawks going on to win 6-1 and Crawley skipper Joe Walsh receiving a red card. And Saunders admitted the Whitehawk side, which featured former Crawley midfielder Sergio Torres, deserved to progress. "It was good to get the chance to watch some of the players who haven't been in the first team but it was men against boys really," he said. "I learned a lot because there was an opportunity tonight for a few players to show what they could do. Whitehawk have got a lot of experienced players at their level and the league so well done to them. They were worthy winners but the competition is not our priority."

CRAWLEY Town boss Dean Saunders admits he is unlikely to sign former Hull City striker Matthew Fletcher or Brazilian goalkeeper Evandro Rachoni De Lima. Both players started the 6-1 defeat to Whitehawk on Tuesday night but with a plethora of injuries among the Crawley team, Saunders admitted they were helping him out. "We were struggling to get a team out," the Crawley boss said. "I didn't really want to play Joe or Sonny Bradley or bring Jimmy Smith on. The two trialists registered on Tuesday because we've got a lot of injuries to help us out for that game basically."

A CANDLE which hadn't been blown out caused a house fire in Southgate in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday). Firefighters were called to the home in Loriners at 2.52am. When they arrived the blaze had already been put out but firefighters have issued a warning of the dangers of not putting out candles before going to bed. The crew were able to leave the scene at 3.07am, with the fire not having caused any serious damage. But a fire service spokesman said: "Thankfully this was a small fire but around 350 people are injured each year as the result of fires started by candles. "If you are using candles or tea lights, make sure they are in a suitable containers and keep them away from curtains and furniture and out of draughts "Keep candles well away from children and any pets who may be fascinated by the flame. "Never put them on the top of TVs or on plastic such as bath surrounds, the results could be devastating - always make sure any candles are fully extinguished, especially before going to bed."

Chris Woods, Cancer Research UK's Crawley event manager, said: "We're urging women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take on Race for Life and sign up now.

"Race for Life is non-competitive. It's not about being fit or fast.

"Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun.

"Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.

"With fire in their bellies and trainers at the ready, we know Crawley ladies are up for the challenge."

Harrold 'massively disappointed' with Crawley Town career so far

HE WAS Crawley Town's hero on Saturday after going in goal, but striker Matt Harrold admits he is "massively disappointed" with how his career in Sussex has panned out so far. The 30-year-old joined from Bristol Rovers in the summer but has found himself behind Izale McLeod, Gavin Tomlin and Shaun Miller in the pecking order with most of his 19 appearances for Crawley being as a substitute. Harrold was transfer-listed by John Gregory, then the manager, in mid-November but the striker does not believe he has been given a fair chance. "I can't deny it, I have been massively disappointed with how things have gone here," he explained. "I don't think I have played badly when I have been given a chance. I think I've done well. I don't think I've had loads of chances to score goals, which is obviously what a striker is judged on, but I have been disappointed with how things have gone here because I do want to play. "I didn't come here to warm the bench but I totally understand the situation we are in so I won't be throwing my toys out the pram but obviously you want to play up front, in your position." New boss Dean Saunders has promised to give all five transfer listed players a chance to impress and Harrold is focused on turning his fortunes around in the second half of the season. "It was strange the whole way that [the transfer listing] happen but it's a new start," he said. "Hopefully I can have a big impact for the rest of the season."

A WOMAN has been savagely beaten up while walking along an alleyway.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the victim was approached by two women in an alleyway on Manor Close, in Horley, last Monday (January 5) at about 9.30am.

The attack left her with cuts and bruising to her head and face, but she did not need hospital treatment.

She reported the incident the following day and now a witness appeal has been launched.

Investigating officer PC Gavin Dublin-Cumberbatch, said: "This was a vicious assault which has left the victim with not only physical injuries which will take time to heal but the experience will no doubt stay with her for some time.

"It is believed a silver car drove past the scene moments after the incident occurred, could this have been you?

"If so, please contact us as you may have information vital to our investigation.

"Since the assault was brought to police attention we have made a number of enquiries into the offence but we believe those responsible would have spoken to others about their part in the assault and I urge these people to come forward."

Anyone with information on the attack should call Surrey Police on 101.

Brighton to London Victoria train fails to arrive on time even once during whole of 2014

A RUSH hour train stopping at Gatwick Airport station did not reach its destination on time on a single occasion during the whole of last year. Figures have revealed the 7.29am service from Brighton to London Victoria failed to get in on time on any occasion out of 240 attempts in 2014. The commuter train is due to arrive at Gatwick each morning at 8.03am and depart at 8.05am. Trains either side of the 7.29am service to London Victoria - the 7.14 (which stops at Gatwick at 7.47) and the 7.44 (which arrives at Gatwick at 8.18) - only arrived in the capital on time on one per cent and two per cent of occasions, respectively, according to the new figures released by Network Rail. David Scorey, Southern Rail's managing director, said: "I don't think we're delivering the level of performance customers expect. "We are delivering in a lot of areas, including investment and innovation, but not on performance. We're doing more in that area, that's a major area we're focusing on. "Our network is very busy and congested. An analogy that I'd use is the M25 at its busiest time. "Our network is a bit like that and what we're trying to do is run as many trains as we can because the capacity is needed. "People want those trains, want seats on the trains, want trains to be as long as they can because there is demand for it. "If there is the most minor of problem or delay on a train, another train can be thrown off its path or slot on the network by a couple of minutes which can sometimes then snowball a little to five or six minutes late. "We've identified some issues with the 7.29, with the way it interacts with other services, but the timetable and the capacity demand is so intense that some of the options of what we can do are quite limited."

A CRAWLEY councillor has called on Tesco or Lidl to move into the Morrisons supermarket in Broadfield Barton, after it was announced today that it is going to close. The supermarket giant confirmed yesterday that it was closing 10 stores across the country that weren't making a profit. This morning it revealed that one of those stores was its supermarket in Broadfield. Broadfield councillor Brian Quinn is hoping another supermarket giant will take over the site, so that residents don't have to travel into Crawley to do their big weekly shop. He said: "I've lived her for 39 years and this is among the worst news we've had. "It's going to be devastating for the residents, and the people who work there." It is not yet known when the store will close but Cllr Quinn fears there will be redundancies. He said: "The Crawley (town centre) store will already be full of staff so there won't be many jobs there. "As a councillor, I can only hope that something will come in soon, like a Lidl or Tesco Express. We need something in place as quickly as possible." It is only a matter of months since Morrisons opened a huge new store in Crawley town centre. That is part of a development that includes a Travelodge hotel and the Turtle Bay restaurant. This morning a Morrisons spokeswoman released a statement to the Crawley News, which said: "We have looked extremely carefully at whether the store can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable. A PERVERTED 50-year-old Sussex man has been jailed after admitting that he tried to get a girl aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity. Mark Sorenson, 50, from Harcourt Way, Selsey, appeared at Chichester Crown Court today (Wednesday), having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to 12 child sex offences. He was sentenced to a total of six years imprisonment, and was also served with a sexual offences prevention order severely restricting his access to children and computers, to last indefinitely, as well as being required to register as a sex offender for life. Three years of the prison sentence are to be served in prison. He had pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a girl aged between 13 and 15 at the time to engage in sexual activity. He also admitted arranging the commission of a child sex offence between 2011 and 2013, and ten offences of making indecent images of children during the period 2010 to 2013. The prosecution, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, followed an investigation by detectives from West Sussex CID. Detective Constable Paul Gilmour said; "We began the investigation when information was received from another force that Sorenson had been posing online as a young girl, and was trying to entice another young girl into committing indecent acts. "When we searched his address and examined his computer we found the evidence of this activity, and also indecent images of children." There is no evidence that any local children were involved in the offences.

45 homes set to be built on site of Copthorne nudist camp

A PLAN to build 45 homes on a plot of land in Copthorne that is home to a nudist holiday camp has been submitted.

An application to demolish the existing buildings at Holly Farm and Hollywood Holiday Camp Site, which is home to Little Oaks Sun Club, has been submitted to Mid Sussex District Council.

The 3.58-hectare site on the north side of Copthorne Way sits right between the current built-up area of Copthorne and the forthcoming 500-home St Modwen development, which was green-lit in July despite fierce opposition.

It is unclear what will happen to Little Oaks Sun Club if the application is approved. A club spokesman declined to comment.

The club is a holiday camp and caravan site for naturists and welcomes families for activities including quizzes, parties, fireworks displays and barbecues.

Facilities include a heated swimming pool, tennis courts, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and more than four acres of woodland.

Worth Parish Council vice-chairman Chris Phillips said it would be a shame to lose such a facility.

He added: "Obviously, there are a lot of people who enjoy it there and it will be unfortunate to lose it – if it is lost."

Cllr Phillips has some concerns over the proposed access to the site, should the homes be built.

At present there is a single access point from the A264 (Copthorne Way), though the applicant, Wates Developments, intends to alter the junction so that drivers can only turn left into it and only turn left out of it.

Cllr Phillips said: "If people are exiting the site and going to Crawley, they will have to travel up to the roundabout (at the junction with Brookhill Road and Copthorne Road) and back down again, and there are concerns about how that will work.

"It may cause confusion among other road users, as you don't always expect someone to go right around a roundabout."

Wates' original plans consisted of 60 units with new vehicle access from Erica Way.

However, several concerns were raised by the district council during a pre-application meeting held on October 16.

It was felt that 60 units was too many, that the development should enhance the ancient woodland setting, and that further footpath links between the St Modwen site and the village should be suggested.

The proposed access from Erica Way was scrapped as a result.

A public consultation held at Copthorne Hotel London Gatwick on November 18 was attended by 111 people, 82 of whom completed comments forms. It was concluded that 41 per cent of those who filled in the forms supported the outline proposals for the site.

A revised plan was presented to the district council at a further pre-application meeting on December 1, where the planning officer deemed the amended layout more appropriate.

The application is now pending consideration by Mid Sussex District Council.

They are all being questioned in custody. Detective Inspector Dave Wardley-Wilkins, from Sussex Police, said: "We need to speak to anyone who saw the Golf or the Focus being driven in or around Billingshurst last night or anyone who saw men running from the Focus after it was abandoned. "We also need to find anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in Heathfield Park, Midhurst, and Nyetimber Copse, West Chiltington, yesterday. "Five people are being questioned about a large number of burglaries across the region but we will need the public's help. "If you know anything at all that could help us, please get in touch." The Blair Switch Project: Basford United to Crawley Town

MANY Football League players started their careers in the non-league game but few have made the transition as quickly as Crawley Town new boy Blair Anderson.

The 22-year-old went from being the star player at Basford United, a team just outside Nottingham who play in the equivalent of the Sussex County League, to making his League One debut in just three days.

After turning up at Crawley's training ground for the first time on Thursday, Anderson then impressed Reds boss Dean Saunders, leading the former Aston Villa striker to offer him a contract the next day.

Believing it would take him a while to break into the first team, Anderson told his family to stay in Nottingham rather than travel down to Sussex for Saturday's game against MK Dons - only for the winger to make his Football League debut as a 68th-minute substitute.

"I didn't think I would get on against MK Dons so I didn't tell my friends and family to come," he explained. "My cousin came to watch and now I do kind of wish I'd invited everyone else but everything happened in such a short amount of time. I've only been down here since Thursday.

"It's a big step up but it's always what I've wanted so I knew I'd have to make that step one day if I wanted to make it as a professional.

"It's probably going to take a while to adjust; the fitness required is a lot different to start with and, at Basford, we would be lucky to be playing in front of 100 fans.

"The Crawley fans were really loud but that was all part of the experience and I really enjoyed it. It's an experience that's going to be in my memory for ever.

Anderson is currently on a short-term deal with the Reds but is hoping to earn a longer deal.

"My aim is to focus on Crawley Town, get fitter and help the team but the sky is the limit really," he said. "I just want to get better and better as a footballer.

"I'm hoping I do well and impress everyone at Crawley and hopefully earn a longer contract."

SHOPPERS were taken back to the future at the weekend when an iconic DeLorean car made an appearance at County Mall.

Online estate agency Zoom995 brought one of Hollywood's most recognisable vehicles to the shopping centre on Saturday.
