TIA PERRY scored five as Crawley Wasps U13 ran riot with a 10-0 win at Broad Oak & Horam.

The Wasps were always in control, although it did take them until midway through the first half to open their account.

But the floodgates then opened and in the end it was a big win for the visitors.

Amy Perry added two and there was a goal apiece for Emily Tilford-Carey, Stannard and Church.

Harriers felled by Town girls

CRAWLEY Town Girls U15 beat Seahaven Harriers 8-1 in extremely blustery conditions.

Crawley took the lead from their first attack when Laura Szczegolska raced into the box and finished clinically.

The second goal came out of nothing as Kaitlyn Taylor found the top corner with a fine shot. Crawley were not at their best but found that extra bit of class to get their goals.

The next came from another Szczegolska run with the ball eventually bundled in close to the goal. She claimed her third just before half-time.

Crawley made it five in the second half through Jade Dancaster before Nancy Williams added two more.

Crawley rounded off the scoring when Szczegolska capped her player-of-the-match performance by scoring from close range.

CRAWLEY Town Boys U12 put in an impressive team performance to thrash Pulborough Pythons U12 15-0 in the cup.

The game was one-way traffic and at half-time the score stood at 6-0.

The second half started with the same tempo and it did not take long before the goals started going in.

Crawley Town scorers were; Jay Popham (five), Joe Green (two), Jasper Sylvester (two), Louis Harris (two), Zak Reid (one), Theo Likaj (one), Clayton Hibberd (one). Last on the scoresheet was goalkeeper Louie Nighingill, who scored one as he was unanimously voted by all the players to take the penalty.

Cup defeat is extra hard for Devils to take

CRAWLEY Devils were knocked out of the Sommerville Cup by an Ifield goal three minutes from the end of extra-time.

Things had started brightly for Devils with neat interplay between Ollie Hill and Shaun Sole ending with the latter scoring.

Devils managed to get through to half-time with their slender lead intact, but had goalkeeper Liam Harris largely to thank with a pair of fantastic saves.

Devils doubled the lead after the break when Bailey Forrest set up Dan Groves to score.

But Ifield threw men forward and two quick goals took the tie into extra-time, during which Jack Moody popped up with the winner.

Gilbert third in Brands class

MOTORSPORT: Don Gilbert ended his season on a high with a strong performance at Brands Hatch.

Gilbert suffered a poor start, qualifying in 16th position and crashing in the first race. Making sure he achieved a reasonable spot on the grid for Sunday's race he worked his way up to a respectable sixth place.

Gilbert took advantage of his position going to fourth by the end of the race and third in class.

He started fourth in the second race on Sunday and was up to second into the first corner, but eventually finished fifth, again third in his class.

Gilbert said: "Another strong weekend to finish the season on. The start of the weekend didn't go to plan with the wet weather though. I'm normally comfortable and competitive in the wet, but this has been our first wet weather meeting and we haven't had a chance to find a good set-up for the damp conditions.

"Race two was also good but, after a race long battle between five of us, unfortunately we finished at the back of the group on the last lap from leading much of the race. But all in all, we were happy with our pace."

Crawley Town 1-0 Walsall: Henderson beauty grabs last-gasp win

Crawley Town left it late to secure all three points against Walsall on Tuesday night, winning 1-0 thanks to Conor Henderson.

The substitute found the back of the net in the 89th-minute with a brilliant free-kick to move John Gregory's side up on to 17 points and 13th in League One.

Walsall had chances to kill the hosts off but found goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown in good form, while Adam Chambers and Paul Downing couldn't convert in the second period.

On Saturday, Crawley make the short trip to face Gillingham, who lost 1-0 at home to Preston on Tuesday.

Friends pay tribute to young dad who grew up in Bewbush after his sudden death

TRIBUTES have been paid to a young Crawley footballer, Garry Dean, who died suddenly last Friday.

Mr Dean, who is believed to have been in his early twenties, grew up in Bewbush and was a dad to a young daughter.

He played for Oakwood FC and the team held a two-minute silence in his memory before their match against Seaford Town on Saturday.

Oakwood won 8-1 and dedicated the emphatic victory at their Tinsley Lane ground to Mr Dean and his family.

Oakwood manager Mark Gilbert said the whole club was saddened to hear the news just before the game at the weekend.

Mr Gilbert said: "I first knew Garry when I managed Horley Town FC and he was a player for me. When I moved to Oakwood four years ago Garry came with me.

"He was a striker who could also play wide right because of his pace.

"Over the years he played a few games for us but this season he took part in the whole pre-season and trained hard.

"He was doing well. He played in our match against Crawley Town and played a role in the first couple of league matches.

"Sadly he got injured turning his ankle and was ruled out with a long-term injury."

Mr Gilbert added that Mr Dean had been very popular with his teammates.

He said: "He was jovial and was always happy to have a laugh.

"He was a lovely lad and everyone at the club was saddened when we heard the upsetting news that Garry had passed away.

"It hit us hard and I considered cancelling the match on Saturday but I knew Garry wouldn't have wanted that.

"Before the match I spoke to the squad and told them to go out there and win for Garry.

"The team put in a great performance in his memory. They all did him proud and it was our biggest win of the season."

Mr Gilbert said that the club is hoping to work with Mr Dean's family to hold a memorial match or event at the club in his honour.

Nick Iron, from Oak Way in Northgate, played Sussex County League football with Mr Dean and has fond memories of time spent with him on and off the pitch.

Mr Iron, 33, said: "It is such a sad loss. We were brought up in the same area in Bewbush.

"Garry was such a talented, athletic player and still so young – far too young to be taken from us.

"He was a lively lad on and off the pitch and always very happy-go-lucky.

"He was a great guy to be around."

It is not known at this stage what caused Mr Dean's death.

A BURGLAR has struck at a property in The Acorns, in Broadfield, while its occupants were asleep inside. The thief gained entry through a window and took an iPad and a set of car keys. He then searched the vehicle but did not steal the car. The burglary was reported to police on October 13.

Residents left shocked by violent attack by masked men in Maidenbower

RESIDENTS have told of their shock after a man suffered a fractured eye socket after being punched and kicked by a gang of masked men in an attempted street robbery in Maidenbower.

Police are trying to trace a driver who may without realising it have stopped the victims from enduring further violence.

At about 1.30am on Tuesday, October 7 three young men were walking along Cavell Way when they were approached by four other men, described as in their late teens, who were wearing either plain black or white masks.

They demanded the contents of the young men's pockets and punched and kicked one of them to the head and body.

As a result he suffered a fractured eye socket as well as cuts and bruising.

The attack has stunned many residents in Maidenbower, which is statistically Crawley's most crime-free neighbourhood.

Jack Blair, 20, who lives on Cavell Way, said: "An attack like that shouldn't happen.

"I didn't think this is a place where it would be done. If I had seen it happening I would have gone to stop it. The people that did it need to be banged up or have a hiding themselves."

Deana Shipgood, 42, from Bosham Road, said: "I think it is shocking because sometimes I walk home from work at night, and that's at 11.30pm or 12.30am.

"To think that it happened in Maidenbower is shocking but the thing is crime happens everywhere.

"The people who did it are cowards. I heard they had masks on, so obviously they were cowards.

"The way it sounds it was a targeted attack. At that time of night you don't normally see a soul; it's like they were looking for that person."

Alan Simmons, 51, from Watson Close, added: "I have never known that sort of thing to happen in Maidenbower; it's pretty disgraceful.

"Street crime has always been an issue in Crawley. But I think Maidenbower is safe."

It is understood the suspects were seen just before the incident driving nearby in a silver car, possibly a VW Golf.

The attack ended because the would-be robbers were distracted by a passing vehicle and nothing was stolen.

Detective Constable Mike George said. "We are asking that driver, and anyone else who was in the area and saw what happened or has any other information, to contact us."

Anyone with information on the attack should call Sussex Police on 101.

STRONG winds caused an advertising sign to come loose and fly onto the roof of an office building yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. Firefighters were called in at about 2.10pm to secure the 6m x 4m board to prevent it being blown any further and causing a danger to the public. Brunel Place is located between the Arora Hotel on Southgate Avenue and the Debenhams side of County Mall shopping centre. The crew from Crawley Fire Station used a ladder to reach the roof and retrieve the board. There is currently a development of 22 self-contained apartments taking place in Brunel Place on the site of the former children's centre. It is due to be completed in March.

NAMED AND SHAMED: The Sussex restaurants, pubs, shops and takeaways with the worst food hygiene ratings

THE restaurants, takeaways, pubs, cafes and supermarkets with the worst hygiene ratings in Sussex can be revealed today. A total of 23 businesses in the county which serve food currently have the lowest possible mark – zero out of five. This score means that they are deemed to require "urgent improvement". Another 341 food outlets across the county fared only marginally better - scoring just one out of five. The rating system is used to inform the public about the hygiene standards anywhere that serves food. Each business is scored out of five, having been judged in three categories. The first is food safety and hygiene, such as how well the premises are cleaned; the second is the structure of the premises, such as its layout; and the third is the inspectors' confidence in the management, such as how records are managed. The full list of food outlets to score zero or one - according to the latest data (as of October 22, 2014) on the Food Standards Agency website - is as follows: ZERO STARS Crawley Eastern Spice - Horsham Road, West Green - Council accused of hiding number of deaths expected as a result of fire service cuts

WEST Sussex County Council has been accused of trying to hide the predicted increase in deaths resulting from the budget cuts which were approved last week.

At a full council meeting on Friday, councillors voted through plans to shave £1.6 million off the annual fire service budget by axing firefighters and losing fire engines.

At Crawley Fire Station alone this will see seven full-time firefighters, the town's entire ten-strong retained crew and a fire engine all lost.

Senior retired firefighters, Crawley councillors and even one member of the ruling Tory party who is also a full-time firefighter warned of the tragic cost the cuts are likely to have.

Tony Morris, of the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Stop the Cuts campaign, said that Friday would be "remembered as the darkest and most shameful day in West Sussex County Council's history".

Lionel Barnard, the council's cabinet member for residents' services, proposed the cuts and Councillor Jim Rae seconded the proposal.

Mr Morris said: "Councillors Lionel Barnard and Jim Rae have deceived the council and the public, embarked on reckless cuts, and reduced public and firefighter safety.

"They have been aided and abetted by colleagues [who voted in favour of the cuts] who have put party interest before public safety."

The accusations of deceit arise from the fact that the predicted number of resulting fire deaths was "hidden" in a 280-page document on the proposals.

In West Sussex there were eight deaths as a result of fires in the 2013/14 financial year.

Of those, three occurred in the area covered by Crawley Fire Station – one in Pound Hill and two in Copthorne.

A model used by the fire service to assess risks has calculated that over the next 100 years in West Sussex, due to the cuts, there will be an additional three deaths caused by fires in homes, six deaths caused by fires in other settings, and 46 deaths from incidents such as car crashes.

Andy Petch, a serving firefighter and a Conservative councillor for Hassocks and Victoria, spoke in support of Crawley's firefighters, and criticised his Tory colleagues.

He called Crawley's firefighters "the most experienced and therefore arguably the best firefighters in the county".

He warned: "Cutting other county council services may have caused some people inconvenience, hardship, anger and substantial distress.

"But these will be my first since being on the council that will cost lives."

From April next year Crawley will have just two fire engines, the same number as Littlehampton.

In 2012/13 Crawley received 1,406 call-outs compared with 550 in Littlehampton.

In 2013/14 Crawley Fire Station call-outs rose to 1,483 while they fell to 430 in Littlehampton.

In addition to the deaths there were five rescues in Crawley from house fires since January this year and there are fears some of those people would have died, had the cuts come before those calls.

At the meeting, Michael Jones, county councillor for Southgate and Crawley Central, called on the council to use some of the £18 million in its general reserves to protect the service. But his plea fell on deaf ears.

A council spokeswoman said £18 million is the minimum the Government requires councils to keep in its reserves. She added of the suggestion the figures had been buried: "Nothing was buried. The consultation proposals were summarised in an easy to read consultation document that was freely available and everyone was signposted to further information if they wanted it."

A SECURITY officer has developed an incredible ability for drawing intricate pictures of everything from cows to Lord of the Rings characters.

After leaving school with an A in art at GCSE, Steve Gillett became a postman and pushed his talent to one side.

But after a decade of barely picking up a pencil he fell back in love with drawing and for the past three years has steadily been becoming a master with graphite.

His now vast portfolio of drawings includes commissioned pieces of people's families and pets, as well as sketches of celebrities like Mick Jagger and characters from films.

The 40-year-old, who lives in Wantage Close, in Maidenbower, with wife Sandra, 40, and son Charlie, 7, has just finished his fourth Lord of the Rings drawing as a present for his son.

He said: "It's quite a nice contrast to my work and a nice way to chill out.

"I've got quite a stressful job so to be able to do this as a sideline is great.

"Without sounding big headed I do think I have talent. I used to play it down, especially when I was at school.

"But I've had so many people say I should have gone to college then studied an art degree. But everything you see is self-taught."

His latest portrait is one of Gollum, also known as Smeagol, played by Andy Serkis in the Lord of the Rings films.

It will go alongside pictures of characters Legolas, Frodo and Aragorn, as a present for Charlie.

Mr Gillett's drawings typically take between 15 and 20 hours, using three or four graphite pencils of different thicknesses.

But some drawings take much longer and one in particular – a colour picture of a woman underwater draped in an octopus – took him countless hours over the course of a year to finish, because he chose to copy the picture but as a mirror image of the original.

He said: "You need to have patience to do what I do – realism.

"When I was younger I would spend hours on something then throw it away because it wasn't quite right.

"Now I take the time to fix it until it is right. That's the biggest tip I could give anyone, have patience."

Mr Gillett, who spent 15 years working as a postman, then retrained as a carpenter before starting his current job in security, sells about 15 pictures a year.

He would love to one day sell enough to make it his full-time profession.

Mr Gillett has started holding art lessons at Tilgate Park's recreation centre and is speaking to local schools about giving master classes there.

Mr Gillett will draw "pretty much anything" and takes requests for anything from family portraits to pictures of people's pets.

He said: "People are often a lot more fussy about their pets, like cats, dogs and horses, than they are about pictures of their kids."

Crawley footballer scores hat trick in the World Cup - for homeless people

A YOUNG man who got back on his feet thanks to a youth hostel in Crawley is playing for England in the Homeless World Cup.

Keen footballer Jahobi Maher never dreamed he would get the chance to pull on the national strip and represent his country.

But after impressing during trials at Brighton & Hove Albion's stadium he was chosen to travel to Chile last Thursday for the tournament which started on Saturday and ends this coming Sunday.

Against the USA on Tuesday he scored a hat trick - scoring his first goal only ten seconds into the second half. England ended up winning the game 6-1. Jahobi was named man of the match.

Jahobi - who has been getting attention during the tournament for looking like Chelsea winger Eden Hazard - was one of 13 young men and women who have faced homelessness to be selected from thousands of applicants to be part of England's squad.

He took part in a five-week training programme in April before being invited to train at Brighton's stadium.

He then got the chance to train at St George's Park, the training ground of the England national team.

The 22-year-old spent time living at Crawley Foyer, a YMCA hostel in Horsham Road, West Green, before moving to Robinson House, in Crawley High Street.

Crawley Foyer supports young people facing homelessness and Robinson House acts as a place where young people can live independently with some support before moving into private rented accommodation.

Jahobi said of his selection: "This is all so unreal. I can't explain it in words.

"If someone had told me three years ago that there would be an England kit with my name on it hanging up at the national squad's training ground, I would not have believed them."

The Homeless World Cup is taking place in Santiago and features teams from 64 countries who compete in 14-minute four-a-side games on fast-paced street soccer pitches.

Players are not picked according to their footballing ability, or age.

Instead, players are selected with a particular focus on positive attitude and interpersonal skills.

Two patients tested for Ebola at East Surrey Hospital

EAST Surrey Hospital has tested two people for Ebola after the patients arrived at the hospital showing possible symptoms for the disease, it has been revealed this morning (Thursday). The hospital had to carry out tests to rule out Ebola on each occasion and in both cases it was found that the patients did not have the disease. Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) has said its staff are well prepared if a patient was found to be suffering from the deadly illness. A spokeswoman said: "Relevant information has been shared with staff across the trust and we continue to roll out infection prevention and control training to minimise any risk. "There have been two patients where tests to rule out Ebola were required - in both instances the results were negative." The spokeswoman added that healthcare providers across the UK are testing patients who arrive with a temperature of 38 degrees or above, or a history of a fever in the previous 24 hours, and who have returned from a country hit by the disease. Anyone confirmed to have Ebola will be transferred to The Royal Free Hospital, in London. More than 4,000 people have died as a result of the outbreak in West Africa. Screening for Ebola started Gatwick Airport earlier this week. Anyone travelling into Gatwick from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea is now being screened for symptoms of the disease which has prompted the World Health Organisation to declare an international health emergency. Screenings at Gatwick are taking place in the immigration halls at each terminal, with the help of Border Force officials.

Caterpillars Pre-school children celebrate the start of Diwali

CHILDREN at a Southgate pre-school have shown they are a shining light in multiculturalism as they celebrated Diwali by creating their own lights.

The religious festival, also known as The Festival of Lights, is an ancient Hindu celebration which takes place every autumn.

Children at Caterpillars Pre-school created their own lights by shaping salted dough into candle holders and placing a tea light in them. They then used paint and glitter to decorate them in preparation for the festival tomorrow (Thursday).

Leanne Green, from the pre-school, explained that Diwali is just one of several religious festivals the staff and children celebrate. She said: "We always celebrate different religious festivals in some way.

"It's important because we are a multicultural society and we have lots of different religions and cultures here."

After coming up with their own individual creations the 48 budding artists, who took part in different groups throughout the day, headed off home for a clean-up.

Leanne added: "It's always been a good day when you go home covered in glitter."
