CRAWLEY Town Girls U15 smashed 11 past Hawks Girls in a convincing performance.

Laura Szczegolska got the ball rolling in the first minute, but it took another 20 minutes for the second to come when a superb long ball from Amber Whenham allowed Szczegolska to nip in and score.

She completed her hat-trick before half-time but, after the break, the home side ran riot against their Brighton-based opponents.

Skipper Georgia Mockler netted a penalty to make it 4-0, before Whenham got on the scoresheet.

Town dominated possession and cut Hawks open at will, with Sophie Gilbert and Nancy Williams (two) both coming off the bench to score, the latter netting her first two goals for the club.

Mockler added her second and Jade Dancaster grabbed a brace to complete the scoring for the impressive Town.

BASKETBALL: BC Crawley United suffered a narrow defeat in a hotly-contested opening league fixture.

There were standout performances from the home side with Modestas Krasauskas finishing as the top-scorer with 22 points.

Tadas Domkus got the crowd going with a delightful behind-the-back pass in the early stages as Crawley stormed to a 12-6 lead.

The game was fast and competitive with Crawley United winning the first two quarters.

Both teams chose to play an attractive style of basketball and moved the ball around the court very quickly, with some lightning-fast breaks entertaining the supporters.

Brunel finished the game strongly and took the win but on another day BC Crawley United would have walked off the court victorious such was the level of their performances.

Crawley played extremely well as a team and looked a formidable unit that can stake a claim in this league.

The next game is against Brighton Cougars at Brighton Sixth Form college this Sunday.

CRAWLEY Wasps U14s took on Worthing Divas with renewed verve and confidence which catapulted them to an emphatic 5-0 win.

The Wasps made sure the Divas felt the weight of their pressure the entire game all over the park and made the Divas keeper the busiest opposition player.

The Wasps' goal account was opened with Lily Becketts' determination in the six-yard box to see the ball over the line.

This was followed by a similar effort on the left by Millie Baverstock to double the lead.

And then in-form Jodie Barker took over, adding a fine hat-trick to give the score an impressive slant in favour of the home side.

Inspirational young woman Chloe Carey dies suddenly

AN INSPIRATIONAL young woman who once had her head shaved for charity has died suddenly.

Chloe Carey, of Kilnmead, Northgate, passed away aged 20 two weeks ago and was found by police at her home.

Miss Carey raised £1,300 in 2012 by bravely having her head shaved in aid of The Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre at Crawley Hospital.

The former Thomas Bennett Community College pupil decided to have her hair taken down to grade two after it began to fall out, believed to be due to medication she had been taking.

Miss Carey chose to support the Olive Tree because her grandmother had been treated for cancer at the hospital.

After Miss Carey appeared in the Crawley News a reader, who had herself beaten breast cancer having undergone chemotherapy, contacted the then 17-year-old to show her support.

Linda Sillence offered to shave her head as well, but as her hair had only just started to grow back following treatment, Miss Carey kindly told her that just being with her, at Revive hair salon in West Green, was enough.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman confirmed that Miss Carey's death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner for an inquest to be opened at a later date.

Three Bridges U18s suffer extra-time defeat to Maidstone United

Kent Youth League John Ullman Memorial Cup First Round Three Bridges U18s 1 Maidstone United 2 After extra-time Three Bridges had enough chances to win this cup tie in normal time but in the end the persistence and ability of Maidstone United shone through. Within the first minute, a bad back pass put Alfie Slark in a position where he should have scored and then minutes later Ljubisa Palic was well clear but his shot skimmed the cross-bar. The game became fast and furious at both ends played on a slippery surface after recent rain but overall the pitch was in perfect condition. Paul Johnson sliced his shot when clear through, whilst at the other end, a cross from Joe Ellis found Tom Mackelden whoshot well wide. After 10 minutes, a run by Ljubisa Palic and a cross to Paul Johnson, whose shot was bravely blocked by the Maidstone United goal-keeper Louie Lawlor. Maidstone United were now settling into the game with some neat flowing moves creating chances for Joe Ellis and Marvin Armstrong. On 18 minutes, Danny Leach received a caution for a late tackle and then Maidstone United broke out very quickly from a corner, which caught the Three Bridges defence napping and enabled Joe Ellis to score. Giovanni Johnson came on for the injured Ljubisa Palic to play up front. The score was nearly doubled after 30 minutes when Will Thomas crossed to Yeni Yusuph but his header just clear the cross-bar and Will Thomas saw his shot from a free-kick sail well off target. In time added on in the first half, Three Bridges had a goal dis-allowed for offside. Maidstone United played well in the first half, but still made three substitutions during the interval which looked good for Three Bridges as after 53 minutes PAUL JOHNSON ran on to a long clearance and jumped well above everybody else to head the ball over the goalkeeper into an empty goal to equalise. Three Bridges made two substitutions bringing on Ravi Sandhu and Lewis Croal. Gio Johnson should have put Three Bridges ahead after 75 minutes when he collected a through pass from Alfie Slark, found himself in the clear, but the goalkeeper managed to block the close range shot. Alfie Slark had a rasping shot palmed away by the goalkeeper and then after 87 minutes Lewis Croal combined with Gio Johnson, who turned and shot just wide. In added time, Three Bridges goalkeeper Joe Walker just had time to make a block, with his feet, on a shot from Marvin Armstrong to send the game into extra-time. Three Bridges played really well in the second half and deserved to be level as Maidstone United went off the boil but had they taken their chances, they could easily have won in normal time. In extra time, substitutions were being made thick and fast by both teams and after 96 minutes, a long run by Joe Ellis and a pass across the goal to Chimdi Ottuadinma who side footed the ball into the goal for a 2-1 lead in what turned out to be the winning goal. Maidstone United still had time to see a chip over the goalkeeper by Liam Matthews come back off the cross bar and for Kieran Hughes to be sent off for a second caution. In the final action, a back pass to Joe Walker in the penalty area and in the resultant melee, he received a caution for dissent. Both teams had many chances to win this Cup Tie but in the end Maidstone United showed their skill and fitness counted.

Gregory believes Crawley Town could have beaten Luton by bigger margin

Johnstone's Paint Trophy Second Round Luton Town 0 Crawley Town 1 GWION EDWARDS' 51st minute strike earned Crawley Town a place in the next round of Johnstone's Paint Trophy, but manager John Gregory admits his side could have made the fixture easier for themselves. Gregory made a number of changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Coventry City on Saturday, and was impressed with his players' performances but disappointed Tuesday night's win was not more emphatic. "We could have made it a lot easier for ourselves," Gregory said. "I think we had about 32 shots on goal and we were very proactive going forward. "There were some great individual performances from some of the boys who have been on the outside. Matty Harrold, Gavin Tomlin, Lewis Young and Sonny Bradley played very well, BJ [Brian Jensen] came back into the side and kept a clean-sheet, and Bobson [Bawling] was fantastic. "There were some really good performances but the disappointing thing was that we didn't make it easy for ourselves." And to cap his match winning goal, Gregory informed winger Edwards in the changing rooms after the game that he had earned his first call up to the senior Wales squad for this week's European qualifiers. "Gwion didn't know. I told him in the changing room at quarter to ten," the manager explained. "I told him in front of all the players in the dressing room and I think he thought I was joking at first, but once he realised, he couldn't wipe the smile off his face. We are chuffed and it's a huge honour for Crawley to have two players in the full squad." Crawley Town: Jensen, Bawling, Bradley, Leacock, Sadler, Young, Keane, Elliott, Edwards (Smith, 84), Harrold, Tomlin. Unused subs: Henderson, McLeod, Wright, Ashdown.

YEE-HA! Crawley's only nightclub, Moka, celebrated the birthday of the legendary whiskey maker Jack Daniels the only way they knew how - with alcohol and half-naked dancers. The club on Station Way held a Jack Daniels Tennesse Party last month with cowboy themed fancy dress, hotpants-wearing dancers and of course, plenty of the popular brand of Whiskey. A YouTube video, shot by Crawley group Royalty Three, has gained 554 views since it went live. If you want an idea of what goes on at Moka when the sun goes down, have a look at the video below. Jack Daniel's exact birthday is unknown because his birth records have been lost, but it is customary to celebrate it in September.

Three Bridges knocked out of the League Cup by East Grinstead Town

Ryman League Cup First Round East Grinstead Town 4 Three Bridges 2 THREE Bridges were left to rue a lapse in concentration after being dumped out of the League Cup by local rivals East Grinstead Town on Tuesday night. Allan Tait forced a good early save from Bridges old boy Mark Fox, whilst almost immediately Matt Daniel fired wide of the near post. But pressure told after sixteen minutes when a lovely ball from Mark Pulling found Matt Whitehead breaking quickly on the left, and his neat pass inside was drilled home by Tait inside Fox's near post. Layton Schaaf was the danger man for the Wasps at this stage and he was just wide with a scissor kick before forcing Kieron Thorp to a good low save. Fox was grateful to somehow palm away a stinging volley from Ben Godfrey, but after 38 minutes a break down the left finished with Layton Schaaf equalising, and soon after he forced Thorp to another good save. The half closed with Daniel having a shot pushed aside, and the second half started with Bridges back in the ascendency. Great work by the tireless Jamie Crellin created the opening for Abu Touray to restore Bridges' lead after 57 minutes, and the visitors looked the more likely winners at that stage. But after 65 minutes we were caught flat footed as Sam Schaaf netted with his first kick of the match. Hakeem Adelakumi saw a curling effort pushed wide as we countered, but a long ball in the 75th minute found Pulling isolated against two attackers, Freddie Barker applying the almost inevitable finish. And in added time, just after Crellin came close to taking the game to penalties, Grinstead broke again with Layton Schaaf, who had been a late replacement after an injury to George Hiller-Jones in the warm up, set up Barker to head home and make the scoreline look rather flattering. New cycle path means people can now get from east to west of Crawley on two wheels

A NEW section of shared use pedestrian and cycle path has been opened to the public. The path connects The Dingle (Quantock Close) in West Green to Ifield Community College, The Mill Primary School and Ifield railway station, providing a legal path and a safe crossing under Crawley Avenue. The new link enables people to cycle, using signed routes, between the town centre and Ifield. While the path has always been there, it could not legally be used by cyclists. It forms a key 'missing link' in the overall Crawley cycle network and is designed to enable more people to use their bicycles to get around Crawley with an easy, level and safe east-west crossing of the A23. The path was first planned in 2006 and was constructed by West Sussex County Council (WSCC) following a number of issues, including land ownership and, most recently, by a landslide. The bank on which the landslip occurred has now been stabilised. A residents' Let's FACE it! event will be held next year to plant wild flowers and bulbs along the newly-built banking. Crawley Cycle Forum worked hard through all the ups and downs to ensure its construction, and is pleased to see that it is now open to public use. Councillor Peter Smith, who is a Right to Ride campaigner for national cycling charity CTC, said: "I first suggested this route to the forum and have been working to get WSCC to deliver this improved cycle path in Ifield for over five years. I am delighted that it has now been delivered, as it will enable residents to cycle to the town easily and safely and to help encourage people to cycle to school and to Ifield station. It's been a long time coming but I think that it has been worth the wait." Cabinet member for Environmental Services, Cllr Colin Lloyd, added: "The construction of this new cycle path provides a safe link for residents; it also provides cyclists with the right environment they need while encouraging more people to take up cycling." Along with the construction of the new cycle path, new cycle maps, including bus stops and walkways, are available at the Town Hall, Crawley train and bus stations, K2, The Hawth, Crawley Library and at Tilgate Park. HUNDREDS of people paid their final respects to a Crawley nightclub doorman and his best friend who were killed in a motorbike crash.

The popularity of best friends Thomas Dawes and Luke Power, who worked at Moka in the town centre, was recognised by an "incredible" turnout at their funeral in Forest Row on Tuesday last week.

Family and friends poured into Holy Trinity Church for the service hours before a stunning sunset drew the emotional day to a close.

Among them was Chris Malden, 21, who formed a close bond with Luke while working on the door together at Moka.

He said: "It was a really tough day. None of us expected to be having to put our friends to rest so soon and it was very emotional.

"The turnout was absolutely incredible, and it goes to show how popular they were and how much respect people had for them. I feel honoured to have been a part of it."

Joanna Cleeve met the boys for the first time in May when she photographed Thomas' father's wedding.

The 24-year-old, from Midhurst, added: "Thomas always knew how to make me smile from a text or a phone call.

"It was a really hard day with lots of tears, but with so much love shown to him from so many family and friends."

Thomas, 19, of Medway Drive, Forest Row, and Luke, 20, of North Street, Turners Hill, died after their motorbikes collided with a green Range Rover on the B2026 Chuck Hatch Road, near Hartfield, on September 14. Scores of messages and floral tributes were left at the crash scene in the days following the incident.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone who saw either of the bikes or Range Rover in the minutes before the crash to come forward.

The 52-year-old driver of the Range Rover, who was arrested and questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has been released on bail until November 10.

He has not been charged with any offences at this time.

A 14-YEAR-OLD has fought off a man who grabbed her as she was walked home through Tilgate Park on Saturday morning. The girl had been trained in self defence and kicked and punched the man before she run off. Shortly before 10am on Saturday (October 4) the girl was walking home through the park towards Salisbury Road when a man grabbed her by both arms. But the girl fought the man off. A short time later a 35-year-old man from Crawley was arrested on suspicion of assault. He was questioned before being released on bail until October 31. Sussex Police want to find anyone who saw the teenager being grabbed or where her attacker went next. They are also keen to find out if there have been similar incidents where the victims have not reported to police what happened to them. This incident is not currently being linked to any others. The man was white, very thin, 5' 7" and 30 to 40. He had pale skin, stubble on his chin and was wearing a black tracksuit with the hood up and cuffs slightly rolled up. "We need to find people who may have seen a man acting suspiciously in or around the park on Saturday or on other occasions. "The teenager was badly shaken by what happened but was not injured. "We do not know what the man's motive was but need to identify him to find out." Anyone with information should email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 532 of 04/10, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

ELDERLY residents of sheltered housing in West Green were entertained and treated like royalty during its Silver Sunday celebration.

The event, which took place on Sunday, October 5, at Greenfields Sheltered Housing, included a singer, tea and cakes – provided by local supermarkets – and visits from the town mayor Brenda Smith and local PCSOs.

Organiser Gloria Broom, who is also a resident of the home in Town Barn Road, was delighted with the turnout.

She said: "It was such a warm and friendly environment and the residents couldn't believe how good the singer was.

"I am really pleased with how it went as I had no money to work with so everyone who was there came for free."

Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. Its aim is to celebrate older residents and to help them get out and about and meet new people.

It is held on the first Sunday of October.
