A TOTAL of 88 prisoners jailed for crimes including murder, robbery and violent assault are still at large after absconding from a Sussex prison. Police have issued an appeal for help in tracing eight of the men, who are thought to be the most at risk of committing more crimes. Three of those eight men were jailed for murder and the others were jailed for violence or robbery. Superintendent Lawrence Hobbs said: "We have assessed the cases of each and every prisoner who is currently wanted after absconding from Ford Prison and decided these men need our attention the most, considering how likely they could be to commit more crimes. "We have no evidence that any of these men are a danger to the public but because of the offences they have previously committed we cannot rule it out. "We need the public's help to track each and every one of them down and return them to custody. "Some of the men may have absconded a number of years ago and may not have broken the law since then but justice has not been done in any of their cases as they still need to complete the sentences they were originally given. "If you have any information at all about where they could be, please contact us." The Ministry of Justice determines which prisoners should be sent to Ford. David Blood, 48, is the latest to walk out of the prison and not return after he absconded some time between 8.30am and 1pm on Thursday last week. He was jailed for life at Stafford Crown Court in 2003 for robbing a post office in Wylde Green with a number of other men in the West Midlands in December 2000. Robert Donovan, 57, was jailed after he stabbed to death a man in the street in London's West End when he was 17. In December 1974 he was jailed for life for the murder. He left Ford Prison on day release in June 2010. He did not return and officers have been unable to trace him since. Steven Evans, 55, was jailed for life in February 2003 after he was convicted of assault. After getting into an argument with his victim, Evans waited six hours for him in a Southend car park and then attacked him with a metal bar. He has previous convictions for robbery, handling stolen goods, wounding and firearms offences. He absconded from Ford Prison in March 2013. Craig Hayler, 30, absconded on March 10 this year. He had been jailed for 30 months for a burglary in Poplar Avenue in Hove in December 2012. Hayler has a series of convictions for burglary, theft and fraud offences. Arben Nuredini, 39, also known as Arben Alizoti, was jailed for seven years in December 2004 for wounding. He absconded in January 2005. Timothy O'Leary, 59, was jailed for life for the murder of a fellow traveller in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in September 1981. O'Leary, who also uses the name Timothy McCarthy, absconded in March 1997. Derek Passmore, 49, walked out of Ford Prison on June 22, 2013 on day release. He was serving a sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of a man in a street in Hampton, Middlesex, in October 1996. Christopher Street, 62, was jailed for seven years at Croydon Crown Court in August 1999 after he was convicted of conspiracy to rob and firearms offences. He already had convictions for burglary and firearms offences. He absconded from Ford Prison in November 2001. Anyone with information about any of the men should call 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

CRAWLEY Town have added a striker to their growing squad with Gavin Tomlin joining on a one-year deal. The 31-year-old joins from Port Vale for an "undisclosed fee", where he made 28 appearances and scored six goals last season. The Reds beat Southend United to the signing of the striker, who also counts Brentford and Gillingham among his former clubs. And Reds boss John Gregory says he has been a long-time admirer of Tomlin. "I'm delighted to get this one over the line. I have always admired Gavin," Gregory said. "He is a striker first and foremost with a good goalscoring record during his career but he can also play in midfield or out wide. "He's two-footed and has got a terrific attitude. Everyone who I spoke to about him was very complementary about him as a professional and a person. "He's going to play a big part for us next season. A lot of clubs were keen on him but he's coming to us and I am very happy about that."

EMERGENCY services are currently at the scene of a collision close to Ifield Community College. The collision, which police say involved four cars, happened at 4.10pm but police are still on the scene and clearing away the cars and debris. Traffic is queuing along Crawley Avenue as a result with severe delays expected. A spokesman for Sussex Police said at this stage it appears there have been only minor injuries to those involved. The fire service were called because of a potential fuel leak. One of the cars ruptured a hose but it was coolant rather than petrol that had leaked onto the road. Firefighters made the scene safe and assisted police to move the cars from the road. One of the cars, a Saab, had a crack in its windscreen, damage to the front and its airbag had gone off after the collision.

TILGATE Park was turned pink this evening as an estimated 2,500 women took part in this year's Race for Life. Raising money for Cancer Research UK they endured testing heat in the Crawley park to complete the 5km course. The run - which women are encouraged to tackle at their own pace - got under way at 7.30pm. For a gallery of pictures click the link below. As ever there were lots of moving messages on T-shirts as participants remembered family and friends who have fought cancer - many of whom sadly didn't win their battles. Arriving for the event in anything other than head to toe pink just isn't the done thing, and as ever there were plenty of spectacular outfits on display - including two women dressed as Tellytubbies. Roads were gridlocked ahead of the event due to the sheer number of people taking part or supporting runners. The final sum raised won't be known for some time but it is expected that it will easily surpass £100,000.

Woman bravely completes Race For Life just 2 weeks after having mastectomy

AN inspiring mother from Furnace Green was the last person to cross the finish line at this evening's Race For Life - having taken part just two weeks after having a mastectomy. Alison Edwards, who will spend her 55th birthday on Monday undergoing tests, was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 28 and was in surgery within a week. Despite her life having been turned upside down she was determined to take part in this year's event, and spent days walking in preparation for the 5k route around Tilgate Park. Alison, who lives in Epsom Road, Furnace Green with her 14-year-old daughter Lauren, who also took part, said: "This time last month my life was normal. Then I had a biopsy and a week later I was diagnosed. When I went into hospital I said I felt like I was living someone else's life - which is annoying because that means I did someone else's washing and ironing before I went in! "Before I went down to theatre I felt like I'd stepped back into my own life. I have down days and I have up days and this is definitely a good day." Her daughter, Lauren, said that seeing so many people who have been affected by cancer has made her realise they are not alone. The Hazelwick School pupil said: "It's nice to know you're not the only ones going through it. You feel like there are a whole lot of people to support you through it." PERSONAL battles and those of loved ones were shared at this evening's Race For Life as thousands of women united to tell cancer to "jog on". An estimated 2,500 women took part in the 5k run or walk around Tilgate Park, each with a story to tell. Participants were encouraged to write the name of the person or people for whom they were taking part on their backs and some spoke to the Crawley News about why they were there. One group of 26 staff members at the Tesco.com centre in Manor Royal were there in memory of a colleague who died in January after losing her battle with cancer, and also for other friends and family. One of the women, Sarah Moylan, tragically lost her husband Lee the day after they got married in 2006, after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and told he had only weeks to live. Sarah, 52, whose mum also died from liver cancer, completed the route in memory of Lee, who coached the TD Sports football team in Crawley. The couple had two children together. Sarah said: "Looking back I don't know how we coped but we had a good network of friends and they are still there supporting us now. "I also lost a neighbour to cancer and I just think it's such an evil, horrible disease. Every year we take part in Race For Life and every year it's amazing to see so many people doing it." To read more about Sarah's and her colleagues' inspiration for taking part, and plenty of other stories and pictures, see next Wednesday's Crawley News. Worried England could crash out of the World Cup? Don't worry - as psychic meerkat predicts wins over Uruguay and Costa Rica

THERE is no need to worry football fans, England are going to battle on in the World Cup and qualify from their group.

That's according to Tilgate Nature Centre's potentially psychic meerkat, anyway.

In the hope of finding their very own Paul the Octopus, the team at the popular attraction have been asking some of their animals for World Cup predictions.

After England's loss to Italy the skills of Terence the tortoise and Diago the coati were no longer needed – as both had gone for a Three Lions victory.

However, Priscilla the meerkat was not so kind to Roy Hodgson's men as she went for an Italian victory – clearly knowing she was on to a winner.

Following the success the team at the nature centre challenged the meerkat to predict the remaining England matches in the group stages in Brazil.

Treats were left in bags with the teams' names on to coax out Priscilla's psychic ability.

And those worried about an early exit for England can take a sigh of relief because according to Priscilla we are going to beat both Uruguay and Costa Rica.

He had been visiting London before he was detained at Gatwick. He was moved to Meadowfield Hospital to be assessed and monitored on June 5 but left on Monday. He has not been seen since. PC Heather Mackay said: "Douglas has never posed a risk to people but we are concerned for his safety. He does not know Sussex, has no money on him and has nowhere to stay. "Douglas is an avid reader so it is possible that he may go to libraries in the area to sit quietly on his own. Success breeds success as Malik family rule the squash court

WHETHER champions are born or raised, there is no doubt the Malik family are doing something right. The family, who are all members of Crawley Squash Club, have no less than five Sussex county squash titles and earlier this month ten-year-old Torrie Malik defended her U11 national title to add to her older brother Curtis' U15 national title. In addition to his individual accolades, Curtis, 14, who at one point held the county, regional, national and British U13 titles simultaneously, has recently captained England in a successful campaign at the European Team Championships. Meanwhile, Perry, 12, has also won county titles and eight-year-old triplets Bailey, Sumner and Heston bagged a first, second and third in the Sussex County Squash Championships in 2012. And the children's father, and a keen squash player and coach himself, Camron, admits it is sometimes hard to believe the success of his brood. "It's all happened so fast," Camron explained. "There are six children in the family and they all play squash. I'm quite proactive and hoping to give my wife a lie-in on a Sunday morning I started taking the two eldest boys to play squash at K2. "Torrie, our daughter, was quite stubborn about not wanting to join in, but as soon as her younger brothers, the triplets, began coming along she changed her mind. She saw they were hitting balls better than her, and that was it. "Having only taken the sport up at seven, she's made amazing progress." And Camron admits it is friendly competition between the children that keeps the Malik trophy cabinet well-stocked. "They are so competitive – everything is a fight to the death but it's nice competitive as well," he said. "I like to think I'm a good coach and I certainly know my children well and it's just a matter of keeping them motivated. "If they don't want to be on the court then I take them off. "I don't really sit back and think of it as extraordinary to have all these titles in the family but I guess it's a nice achievement. "It has certainly been a good year for us." If anyone would like to sponsor the Maliks, they should email camron_malik@yahoo.co.uk

The 11th staging of the Steve Webb Memorial Pairs attracted a field of 18 entries to the Three Bridges Football Club where the prize fund was £48. Steve was a well respected member of the Sperry team for many years and it was appropriate that this year the memorial event would again be won by a pair featuring one of his fellow players, after previous champions Steve Mecrow and Phil Smith met in the final. Last season's winner Mecrow was partnered by Tye Coward with Phil Smith paired with Graham Martin of TB Allstars. Mecrow and Coward had reached the final with wins against Dan Bradford/Tommy Sykes and in the semi-finals Ray Miller/Dave Chamberlain. Smith and Martin's wins were against Ernie Potter/Mal Bradford, Ross Mitchell/Dave Vass and Mick Kerridge/Pete Stevenson. In a final tense play-off, Mecrow won the first leg but Martin levelled the score thanks to spot on finishing. Smith made it 2-1 for the challengers and the deciding leg saw both pairs reach double 16 after heavy scoring. Once again, it was Smith who notched the double to win the prize money and the Memorial Cup for the Sperry/All Stars combination. Dan Bradford made up for his early exit from the pairs competition when he won the Moneyin/Money out singles staged later. The Sperry player collected the prize money after winning the final 2-1 against the Swan's Ray Miller, hitting a 180 and checking out on 118.

A SNAKE has been stolen from a flat in Crawley during a burglary. The King Python was taken from the flat in Garden Walk in West Green, Crawley. They are not poisonous but are among the few snakes in the world that have been suggested to prey on humans. However, there are few authenticated cases where this has happened. A fully grown python (which can be up to 22ft long) has the ability to open its jaws wide enough to swallow a human teenager. The break-in happened between 2pm on June 9 and 7.30pm on June 10. The victim returned home to find the top of the snake's enclosure had been lifted and the snake was gone. Nothing else was taken. The snake, named Pookie, is a 2ft long, black, brown and sand coloured. Anyone who has seen a snake matching this description for sale or anyone who has information about the burglary is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101.

Scores of potholes filled in as £300,000 is spent on Manor Royal's "atrocious" roads

$

MANOR Royal's "atrocious" roads had £300,000 of investment fast-tracked after the county council's leader was urged to check the state of them for herself - and there is more to follow.

Pressure for work to be brought forward came from Manor Royal Business Improvement District (BID), which was set up in July last year to improve the area.

In the past few months the group, which is made up of the 500-plus businesses within the district, has successfully argued its case for urgent repairs to be made to roads including Fleming Way, Manor Royal and Gatwick Road.

A number of huge potholes have been filled in – but only after West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith was shown around the district so she could see for herself the state of the roads.

Steve Sawyer, Manor Royal BID's executive director, explained that the roads had been "atrocious", adding that there is still a lot of work to be done to bring them up to the standard they should be.

He said: "We have successfully highlighted to the county council the need for investment in Manor Royal's roads.

"As a result they have brought forward planned works in Manor Royal and Fleming Way by two years.

"Some of the worst potholes have been done – if you compare those to the ones that are left.

"Those that are left are still pretty big so you can imagine what the others were like."

In the current financial year - 2014/15 - Wheatstone Close is due to be resurfaced, and further repairs will be carried out on Fleming Way, at the Fleming Way/Gatwick Roundabout and on Gatwick Road.

Mr Sawyer estimates the BID has brought about £1 million of investment already, partly money put forward by businesses and partly because there has been better dialogue with the county council.

Other forthcoming improvements include a pedestrian crossing at one end of Fleming Way so that employees can safely get to Tesco Express on the other side of London Road.

That will be paid for by the county council and will be installed within the next year.

A system of CCTV cameras, funded by the BID, is being installed across the district in the coming months with work starting today (Thursday).

And a new park, called Crawter's Brook, is being created and is expected to be open by mid August.

Mr Sawyer said: "The county council can't engage with 500 businesses so what this BID has done is provide a point of contact which represents all of those businesses."

Peter Smith, Crawley Borough Council's newly appointed cabinet member for planning and economic development, has been campaigning for improvements to Manor Royal's roads for years.

He hailed the sudden rapid progress but added that it is the "result of concerted action over quite some time by quite a few people and the extra impetus that the BID has brought".

"The key thing to note is that West Sussex have shown they are capable of repairing roads and repairing them nicely," he added.

"What they do need to do is bring forward a programme of maintenance."

A council spokeswoman said the cost of the next set of roadworks is being assessed and the work will then be scheduled.

A MAN has been attacked with a knife this afternoon while out jogging. Police initially taped off an area of Woldhurstlea Wood this afternoon in Gossops Green as they investigate the crime. The area of woodland is close to Buckswood Drive, and is between Bewbush and Gossops Green. The jogger was attacked near the edge of the woods close to Coxcomb Walk, Bewbush. A police helicopter has also been seen circling various neighbourhoods in Crawley over the last hour, looking for the attacker. An ambulance, a police van and police dogs have been at the scene, having been called at 2.35pm. The 29-year-old man, who was cut with the knife, did not need hospital treatment. It is not clear at this stage why he was attacked but he did not know the man who attacked him. Detective Sergeant Glenn Willcocks said: "Thankfully the cut he received was just superficial but it has obviously left him extremely shaken. "The suspect is described as a white man in his mid to late 20s, of stocky build, wearing blue jeans and a black hooded top with the hood up. He is believed to have run in the direction of Mowbray Drive." Anyone with information or who saw what happened is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101.
